Here’s what the peer educators wrote as their wishes/hopes for academics at Rollins, in the last fall ‘08 PEP Sunday session (November).
Some of you new tutors might choose to look at this long list for your journal #3. Look at the Journals! tab for more complete directions.
Academics (Rigor, Honesty, Curriculum Review, Student Learning)
-Don’t take absences so seriously. If a student doesn’t come to class it will show! They will fail themselves if too many missed.
-More things like the colloquy. WPInstitutes, debates, discussions, lectures, forums,
-makes me sad: professors some to expect mediocrity. Young profs are energetic. Idealistic, have high expectations, whereas ones that have been here for a while are cynical and have low expectations. We should push for teachers to structure classes such that students have to rise to the material rather than the material being restructured for the students who are apathetic.
-courses required with my major need to be offered such that I didn’t get screwed over with my gen eds.
-Outward bound classes during intersession.
-tutors living in every residence hall
-make it easier to take higher level interesting classes.
-more service learning courses
-time in class to plug in events and recognize work outside of the classroom
-I think this will improve with the focus on student accountability. Once we change our expectations for what a Rollins student is, this will improve.
Fund Foreign Language Programs!!!
Expand (4), more classes offered for for.lg. if you’re not just wanting gen.eds.
-Get rid of foreign language requirement
-smaller class sizes in the theatre dept.
-stricter selection for RCC professors: Available, Accessible, open, friendly
-bring cooking classes
-sign language as foreign language.
-stop emphasizing the honor code and let students make honesty their choice.
-more study abroad
-not having classes during common hour.
-Grad Requirement: taking a course used to help global responsibility.
-A language Dorm for upperclassmen
-Better coordination by interdisciplinary departments with the component dept to avoid class conflict.
-Stop only rewarding and encouraging Type A personalities
-more hands on type classes
- encourage students to major in what they like not what will make them money.
encourage personal achievement and not grade getting
keep gen ed system the way it is
Do not go with Rollins Minor
more classes with experience outside of the classroom
more understanding early and how to get good academic research
Faculty needs to get more support and get involved with activities on campus
Have student evals of teachers count regardless of their tenure.
More understanding on good academic research
Decide if Rollins is going to have a rigorous academic environment or be relaxed and more focused on community service.
Provide more incentives for students to succeed. Incentives, maybe?
Rewards for good grades.
More course selections
The lack of intro courses is asinine. There should be a set number of into courses for each dep’t. For instance, the ENV studies dep’t. won’t be offering intro courses until spring of next year. The screws over a whole year of potential majors.
Have student evaluations of faculty count regardless of their tenure
Academics need to be taken more seriously. Those with money and influence that go here rarely make the grades but they get to stay here. Rollins should only accept those deserving and courses should be rigorous and get rid of slakers.
Faculty really needs to support and get more involved with activities on campus.
Fewer teacher opinions and more facts.
Just emphasizing the importance of using electronic drop/add.
Don’t take absences so seriously. If a student doesn’t come to class it will show! They will fail themselves if too many are missed.
More things like the colloquy WP institute, debates, discussions, lectures, forums
More lib hours and maybe a professor student swap.
Expand LCC for all first years!
For LCC’s: either they live together or take classes together. Not both. It’s overwhelming.
Professors have come to expect mediocrity- young profs are energetic, idealistic, have high expectations whereas ones who have been here along time are cynical and have low standards.
We should push teachers to structure classes such that students have to rise to the material, rather than the material being restricted to work for students who are apathetic.
An initiative should be made to recruit more professors so more courses are available year round and for students to complete their core requirements.
Curriculum rewrite to include new req’s that better enforce our mission.
More options for smaller majors.
More variety in classes offered.
Find ways to make it cool to be smart rather than cool to be greek.
Offer more seminar-style classes to help students prep for grad school.
Open student records for sched. Changes before classes start.
I feel like Rollins is moving away from an educational institution and more toward an institution that teaches you how to volunteer.

Something that I would like to add which is actually in contradiction with a couple of points on here:
Graduation Requirement: A certain number of volunteer hours must be completed before graduation and perhaps even a reflection about one’s service time.

professors should teach instead of students teaching themselves
December 15, 2008 at 5:38 pm
-decrease the gen. ed requirements because many of them teach the same thing (writing about, literature, etc)
