Here’s what I’ve observed so far…Step 4, Identify thought processes: In most of the appointments I’ve had so far, I’ve been helping peers with study skills and test/quiz preparation. I’ve found that I like to start by asking what their class has covered and how they are feeling about the material and their grasp on it. I also like to ask them how they have studied in the past, both for the course I am helping them with and other classes. I have found what has worked for me, but I realize that it does not work for everyone and also understand how important it is to tailor it to their needs and learning style. That leads directly to…Step 5, Set an agenda for the session, with specifics:  (more…)

I am both excited and nervous to start tutoring at TJ’s.

I cannot wait to help others better understand a subject that I really love, art history.  I feel that I have acquired a good set of study skills that will help my clients learn better.  In the past, I have found myself helping other students, so I am interested in seeing how that will translate to the more formal tutoring format of TJ’s.  I know it will be neat to see my peers “get it” after struggling, and I am really excited to help them do that.

Something that attracted me to the job was the prospect of getting to know the professors in my department even better.  I really like the professors in the art history department, and look forward to getting to know them as a tutor in addition to as a student.

Additionally, I know that I am going to learn a lot in this position.  I am excited to hear students’ opinions on different topics, and also to see how some people learn differently.  I know that I will become a better student myself through this.

While I am excited, I am also nervous to start tutoring.  Besides helping fellow students from classes, I really do not have much experience doing anything like this.  However, other tutors have told me that it is natural to feel this way and that once I have my first client, my fears will be relieved.  Bring it on! :)
